Different meteorological organisations from across the world provide tropical cyclones names to facilitate effective information sharing about the storms and prevent confusion amongst storms that may be active at the same time. Although the naming systems differ by region, they all strive to utilise names that are well-known to residents of the impacted areas and are simple to recall.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) is responsible for coordinating the naming of tropical cyclones globally. The naming systems are split into different regions:

1. Atlantic and Eastern Pacific: The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) names tropical cyclones in this region. The names are selected from a list that is reused every six years. The list includes both male and female names, which are assigned in alphabetical order, with names starting with Q, U, X, Y, and Z not used.
2. Western Pacific: Tropical cyclones in this region are named by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The names are also selected from a list, which includes names contributed by countries in the region. Each country can submit up to ten names every year, and the names are used in alphabetical order.
3. Northern Indian Ocean: Tropical cyclones in the northern Indian Ocean are named by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD). The names are selected from a list that includes names contributed by member countries of the WMO, and they are also used in alphabetical order.
4. Southern Hemisphere: Tropical cyclones in the southern hemisphere are named by different meteorological organizations in each country. In Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology names tropical cyclones using a rotating list of names, while the Fiji Meteorological Service and the New Zealand National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) name tropical cyclones in their respective regions.

In recent years, some organizations have started to include more diverse names in their naming lists to better represent the affected regions and populations.
